The Atlantic Companies® — Our History

We were granted our present charter on April 11,1842, making us one of the oldest insurance companies of our type in America. Known as Atlantic Mutual at the time, we insured many of the nation's merchant sailing ships engaged in trade with the Far East, the West Indies and South America and helped the United States become a maritime power. We were exclusively marine insurers for our first 90 years. We grew as the country grew and attained recognition as a leader in commercial marine insurance. Among the more notable maritime risks the company insured are the Titanic and the Andrea Doria.

During the 1930s, we diversified into the underwriting of inland marine, yacht and fire insurance. As business expanded, we enlisted independent insurance agents and brokers to produce the business. In 1942, Centennial Insurance Company was founded to lead The Atlantic Companies into new geographic territories and to develop new types of coverage.

As the operations of The Atlantic Companies expanded throughout the United States, we were responsible for many contributions to the insurance industry. We were among the first in the country to offer "package policies" (the combination of many coverages into one unified policy) for personal property & casualty insurance. We were also one of the first insurance companies to implement electronic data processing. Our history of innovation, combined with our reputation for service, has earned us a position of influence in the insurance industry that surpasses our size.

Today, we operate in many states throughout the country and specialize in serving the needs of individuals with substantial assets to protect. We also act as a primary property & casualty insurer, manage claims for commercial insurance, and help other business partners target profitable niches in the insurance marketplace.

We are proud that for over 160 years we have always been there “when it counts” for policyholders.
